        _______________________________________________

The 1979/1980 season of CHARLIE'S ANGELS is unlike any other.  With the introduction of the stylish and sophisticated Tiffany Welles, the Angels have become very elegant ladies.  The character of Tiffany is very educated and not so street wise as that of her predecessor, Sabrina Duncan.  Kris has evolved into a very mature woman, very unlike the young and happy girl who walked through the office doors two years ago.  In fact, she appears to have taken over as the leader of the group in Sabrina’s absence.  In episodes like "Angel Hunt", "Toni's Boys",  "Angels on Skates", and "Of Ghosts and Angels", this trio seems more like true friends than any other during the past three years.  Straying from the CHARLIE'S ANGELS formula, Kris and Kelly branch out on their own for a few assignments.  Kelly is spotlighted in "Angel's Child" and "Avenging Angel", while Kris proves her capability as a detective in "One of Our Angels is Missing" and "Caged Angel".   Even the three episodes featuring Jill Munroe send Jill off on her own.  Proving that all three Angels together are better than one, some of the best episodes are "Angel Hunt", "Three for the Money", and "Home $weet Homes".  Also, some of the episodes from the 1979/1980 season are highly reminiscent of previous episodes.  "Caged Angel" recalls "Angels in Chains" and "Three for the Money" is almost a carbon copy of "The Big Tap Out".   Spelling fused one of his other hit shows, ‘The Love Boat’, with CHARLIE'S ANGELS in the season opener, "Love Boat Angels", in which the trio go to St. Thomas to nab an art thief.  The sex factor is lower than ever this year with only Kris showing off her voluptuous figure in only a handful of episodes.  Even though Shelly Hack gives Tiffany Welles a very distinctive personality, the absence of Sabrina's intellectual wit and brassy charm are very noticeable.

After meeting the new Angel, Tiffany Welles, the team hops on board The Pacific Princess to help a grumpy insurance agent recover bronze & gold artifacts that have been stolen by a charming missionary soldier.

Undercover Angels:

Kris pretends to be a gold digger.

Angel Clues:

*Why would Sabrina call Charlie to tell him she is pregnant and not the Angels?  They were the ones she would have been the closest to!

*Kelly and Kris tell Charlie that Tiffany is "special" within minutes of meeting her.  How could they possibly feel that way so soon?

*Gone is the perky and bouncy Kris Munroe audiences knew and loved.  Taking a cue from her sister Jill, this episode shows Kris beginning to mature into a woman of the world.  She will continue to ascend into major adulthood during the next two years.

*The Angels, especially Kris, are totally abetting thieves! It is obvious they dislike their client, but how could they let Hollister and Anderson get away with stealing?

*Tiffany's father, a childhood friend of Charlie's, is a police chief in Boston and her mother is a Latin teacher.

*Tiffany graduated from the police academy at the top of  her class.  This should come as no surprise, since she has been hired as an Angel!

*Kelly makes a Forrest Gump-like quote when she says her "mother always said – “Pretty is as Pretty does!'"  She also said the same line in "Angels Remembered".  Oh, Kelly! You never knew your mother!!!!!

* Jaclyn Smith, Shelley Hack, and Tanya Roberts would make guest star appearances on "The Love Boat" while simutaneously appearing on 'Charlie's Angels'.

Charlie assigns the Angels to seduce a wealthy man about town who is also a jewel thief.  What he doesn't tell them is that Jill has already succeeded at doing so, which confuses the Angels into believing she has converted to the dark side!

Undercover Angels:

Kelly is Allison Beckworth, a writer doing a book on wealthy heirs.

Jill poses as a dashing jewel thief

Tiffany is a sports car aficionado

Angel Clues:

*Kelly makes a stunning statement that must have pleased the show's critics.  "We'll have to rely on wits instead of wiles", she says after Tiffany and her strike out with Roth.  Jill later confesses that it took six tries to catch Damian's eye.

*Tiffany and Jill are never formally introduced onscreen!

*Charlie makes somewhat of a chilling prediction.  He claims that Damian Roth is "a man with James Bondian tastes and charm..."  Timothy Dalton, who played Roth, would become the future James Bond in ‘The Living Daylights’ and ‘License to Kill’.

Tiffany and Kelly are Sisters Teresa and Maria, servants of the lord.

*Kris is given a prisoner number of 52070

*Must Kris have to do everything like her sister Jill?  As Angel fans know already, the original Angel trio paid a similar visit to a woman's prison as inmates ("Angels in Chains").  Kris insists that she be the one to go into the prison, even after Tiffany says that she will do it.  Kelly is no dummy!  Having already been to prison, she suggests drawing straws.

*Sally Kirkland had a lucrative Hollywood career before this job and would later be nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the 1987 film ‘Anna’.

Undercover Angels:

Kris is a singer

Tiffany and Kelly are student dancers and hours later pose as high priced prostitutes!

Angel Clues:

*Tiffany claims that she can play the violin.  Note that she had already played the cello in "Angels at the Altar"

*As Kelly and Tiffany are walking to Georgia's Diner, they pass a hooker and her john. Note Tiffany's facial expression at the sight of them!!

*Considering the fact that Judy won't talk and her father isn't too intelligent, it seems very unrealistic that the Angels would go undercover as hookers in such a seedy neighborhood, putting themselves in such danger when they have nothing to gain financially. Judy isn't even nice to any of them.  Usually Bosley would prefer to bail out of a free case, but this time he lets the Angels make the decision.

Bosley is Warren Rambert, a talent scout for the West Coast Roller Derby

Kris is a Freddie Fortune skate dancer

Tiffany poses as Yvvone Heddy and Kelly as Tara White, two reporters for Roller Disco Magazine.

Angel Clues:

*Kelly's pseudonym, Tara, is probably a throwback to the home featured in the classic film ‘Gone With the Wind’.  Jaclyn Smith's home during the 70s and 80s was a replica of it.

*Ed Begley Jr. would go on to star in the hit series St. Elsewhere

*Roz Kelly had previously found fame as Fonzie's girlfriend, Pinky Tuscadero on the ABC sitcom, ‘Happy Days’.

Tiffany returns to her alma mater, Whitley College, to look for two missing students who have been kidnapped and are about to be sold into white slavery.

Undercover Angels:

Bosley is Zachary Preston, Class of 51 -an insurance agent turned writer of western novels.  He also poses as a football scout

Kris is a class auditor

Kelly poses as a football scout

Tiffany is a "big sister" posing as a journalist.

Angel Clues:

*Tiffany was the president of the Kappa Omega Psi sorority and is now considered to be a legend for changing the structure of the house.

*Note the ridiculous horrified reaction the sorority sisters give off when the lights go out.  You have to see it to believe it!

*Whitley College appears to be located in California, as there are visible palm trees and the Angels are seen driving their own cars instead of rentals.  It seems unlikely that Tiffany would have previously spent any length of time in California according to comment she made in "Angels On Skates" in which she questioned if the hobby would make her a "true Californian".

*In the December 1993 issue of DETOUR magazine, reporter Dennis Hensley and comedienne Margaret Cho has this to say about CHARLIE'S ANGELS:

Cho: "...What I always wondered about was this theme of  white slavery."

Hensley: "I know, it was on every episode"

Actually, "white slavery" was only mentioned in this episode and this episode only, although it is very true that women were always being kidnapped for various reasons.

Upon receiving a distorted telephone call from "Charlie", the Angels are taken to a deserted island where they become hunted prey by one of their employer's most ruthless nemesis.

Angel Clues:

*The phone number of Townsend Associates is 555-0267

*Viewers see more of Charlie in this episode than ever before. Note that he no longer has the grayish perm that he sported for the first three seasons.

*Never underestimate the power of an Angel!  First Kris beat up two alligators ("Winning is for Losers") and now Tiffany calms a wild tiger!

*No other episode exposes the trio as friends like this one does.  Tiffany makes startling revelations about how much the Angels mean to her and laughs at the days in college when she wanted "adventure" in her life.

*Tiffany uncovers the Diablo sign on the beach, spots the warm cigarette, and questions Wilson about how genuine the case really is.  Not only is she presented as an intelligent college graduate, but she seems to be filling Sabrina's shoes as a the chief clue finder quite well.

*Note that Tiffany has more lipstick on her second night on the island than she did when she arrived the morning before, despite the fact that she left her purse on Wilson’s boat.  Only the Angels could spend three days on a deserted island and leave with full make-up and  beautiful hair.  Ginger and Mary Ann would have been proud!

Undercover Angels:

Kelly poses as Webber's long lost niece.  She also pretends to be a painter while spying on Ranez's men

Angel Clues:

*Note how different Kris and Tiffany look when they arrive to the the marina as opposed to what they looked like back at the office only a short time ago.

*First of all, why isn't Kelly helping her partners with the book work?  Secondly, why are these gorgeous detectives doing book work for cheapskate Charlie anyway?

*The scene in which Kelly tries to park the boat puts Tiffany in a very unusual predicament.  As if she stepped out of an ‘I Love Lucy’episode, Tiffany hangs from the edge of the yacht with one leg in a porthole while trying to coax Kelly to back the boat up.

*This is the first time viewers get to see Tiffany driving Sabrina's Ford Pinto!  Note that her license plate number (846 RUZ) is the same as Sabrina's too!

Tiffany uses the help of a ghost named Madeline to stop her friend from marrying a killer.

Angel Clues:

*Tiffany once worked with ghost hunter Hans Kempler in her college days.  She also studied the occult and was deemed a "sensitive" by psychics.

*Poor Shelly Hack!!  Her character Tiffany Welles was only spotlighted in two episodes, "Angels on Campus" and this one.  This is one of the worst episodes ever, second only to "Chorus Line Angels".  The phantasmal theme had already been played to the hilt in "The Seance", "I Will Be Remembered", and "Haunted  Angels".  And so has the theme of an Angel's friend being engaged or married to a greedy killer or con-man in "Angels Belong in Heaven" and "Angels at the Altar".

While looking for a missing man, the Angels try to save a clueless girl from a life of porn and debauchery.

Kris plays a potential porno star

Angel Clues:

*While discussing the case in the office, Kelly states that Tiffany's car is now a mess, but it has just been shown in the exterior shot of the office in its standard condition.

*Lynne Marta sings "Home", the song on Beth's tapes to Seth. She also sang for Amy Waters in "Angel Blues", and would appear as the villainess in "One Love –Two Angels".  She was also once married to David Soul of ‘Starsky & Hutch’ fame.

*For three of the saddest episodes of CHARLIE'S ANGELS, ("Angel Blues", "Catch a Falling Angel", & "Angels on the Streets"), emotional ballads by desperate women are played continually throughout the episodes to set a depressing mood.  These stand-out episodes show that there is more to detective work than fun and games for pretty girls with guns.

Angel Clues:

*Jaclyn Smith's dog Albert makes another appearance, this time actually getting a credit at the end of the show!

*If critics think Charlie Townsend is a sexist pig, wait until they get a load of Barry Kingsbrook.  Not only does he prance around his business with his shirt unbuttoned to his naval, but he only hires beautiful starlet types to sell homes!  And that isn't all!  They are not permitted to wear pants, only dresses which show off their gorgeous      legs!!

Charlie hires three hunky male detectives to protect the Angels from a man they put away six months ago who has targeted them for revenge.

Undercover Angels:

Tiffany poses as a potential model

Kris acts as a potential singer, a model, and a member of the bomb squad.

Kelly poses as a model and a member of the bomb squad also.

Angel Clues:

*Tiffany is the only Angel to ever be seen celebrating a birthday during the five year run of Charlie's Angels.

*Barbara Stanwyck, a Hollywood legend by this time, would go on to star in another Spelling show, ‘The Colbys’.

*Stephen Shortridge had replaced John Travolta in the hit sitcom ‘Welcome Back Kotter’.

*Bob Seagren was the winner of a Olympic gold medal in 1968 and was a regular guest star on television series throughout the 1970’s in such show as ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Buck Rogers’.  His best remembered role was that of a gay football player in the hit sitcom ‘Soap’.

*Kris usually has an eye for a gorgeous man, but is not impressed with Toni's boys at all!  After Kelly and her do everything to insult them, Kris tells her friend that it is like a "triple blind date with Captain America, James Bond, and the Lone Ranger!".

When Kelly falls in love with Bill Cord, a San Diego lawyer who has pegged her as being the long lost heiress of a wealthy hotel baron's estate, she hires the Angels to investigate her mysterious past.  In doing so, Cord begins working with Kris and the two of them also fall in love.  As the two longtime co-workers collide over their new boyfriend, he turns up dead and it is up to Tiffany and Bosley to reunite the feuding Angels to solve the case.

Undercover Angels:

Tiffany poses as a reporter.

Angel Clues:

*According to Bill's research, Kelly was raised at the St. Agnes Orphanage in Dallas, Texas until 1964, when a fire destroyed the place.  She then spent the remainder of her youth in foster homes.  No wonder Kelly was so suspicious about being a lost heiress, since she had visited her childhood orphanage only a few years before in "Target Angels".

*Kelly reveals that her last name, Garrett, was given to her by a nun at the orphanage who had the same last name.

*The character of Kris Munroe has no doubt matured a great deal during her third year of employment at Townsend Associates, but her cold hearted comment to Kelly when she saves her life is absolutely shocking, considering Kris is genuinely happy most of the time.  After Kris knocks out Staley, Kelly thanks her, in which, Kris angrily snaps,

"That was for Bill!" Ouch!!

*Patrick Duffy was also making waves as the good brother, Bobby Ewing, on the most popular prime-time soap opera ever, ‘Dallas’.

*Robert Reed, who sinks his teeth into the villainous role of Staley, played everyone's favorite TV dad, Mike Brady on ‘The Brady Bunch’.

*This being Shelly Hack's final episode, the character of Tiffany Welles really shines as a detective and a friend while trying to piece the mystery that is Kelly Garrett together and trying to keep the Angel team intact at the same time.
