The new Angel, Julie Rogers, isn't a graduate of the police
academy like her co-workers. Instead, she has a criminal record and is a top
model. With this new twist in CHARLIE'S ANGELS the tone of the series would become
more serious. In an attempt to attract viewers once more, the location of the
show was moved to Hawaii for the first five episodes. This would
be the last chances audiences would get to see the Angels in bathing suits. Cleavage
would only be present in one more episode after the schedule changes began ("Stuntwomen Angels"). The character of Julie Rogers adds a fantastic burst of energy to the agency. Kelly Garrett seems extremely distant (or was Jaclyn Smith just bored with her?) in the later episodes. Note that in the new credits that Kelly is seen sitting in the office more than she
is waving a gun. Bosley has also changed somewhat. Although he is still featured in some comic scenes, he is portrayed more as a serious detective than in
the past.
Other new mentionable matters include the new exterior shots
of the Los Angeles freeway in between scenes. Due to schedule changes and a writer's strike, the 1980/1981 season pretty much went unnoticed. This was extremely unfortunate for most of these episodes are actually very good and it is a shame nobody
stuck around to see them. The tone of the 1980/1981 season most closely mirrors
that of the first season, minus the flesh factor, when Angels were all the rage!
ANGEL
IN HIDING
(FROM
STREET MODELS TO HAWAIIAN ANGELS)
aired 11/30/80
written by Edward J. Lakso
directed by Dennis Donnelly
co-starring

David Hurst -Stovich
Jack Albertson
-Mr. Jordan
Kitty Ruth –Louise
Nancy Bleir –Terry

While investigating a murder,
the Angels reveal the dark side of an elite modeling agency when they team up with the victim's beautiful roommate to help
crack the case.
Undercover
Angels:
Kelly poses as friend of Jody
Mills and as an aspiring model
Kris poses as a clumsy model
Angel
Clues:
*Viewers learn more about
Julie Rogers in this one episode than they do about any other Angel during the entire five year run of the show!
For full details see "Julie
Rogers -More Than Just Another Pretty Face"
*Tiffany's absence isn't really
explained. Bosley just informs the Angels that she is staying back east.
*Note the Elite magazine cover
that Julie is on. Next to her face is the caption, "The Best New Things!"
*Kelly's license plate number
is 128 UBO. Note that her car had recently exploded in the episode "Toni's Boys".
*Tanya Roberts and Dack Rambo
had recently appeared together in Spelling's 1980 teleflick, ‘Waikiki’. Rambo was somewhat of a teen idol in the early 70s and would go on to star in the
hit soap opera ‘Dallas’.
This episode is loaded with big stars!
Christopher Lee was a horror icon who played Dracula in seven Hammer horror films througout the 1950's and 1970's and would
continue an incredibly long career into the 21st century. Vic Marrow
and Jack Albertson weren't so lucky. Both had been long time staples in episodic TV, but this episode would be amongst
their last few pieces of work. Jack Albertson died in 1981 as the result of cancer and Vic Marrow was killed in a tragic
accident on the set of "Twilight Zone : The Movie" in 1982.
*When this episode originally
aired in November 1980, it was shown as a three hour episode entitled "From Street Models to Hawaiian Angels" and included
the episode "To See an Angel Die". In syndication, it was re-titled "Angel in
Hiding" and is missing a very vital scene in which Kelly and Kris learn that Julie is working with the cops. As Julie sobs while holding her dead friend Harry in her arms, Bosley informs the Angels that Harry was
a police lieutenant. Fortunately this omitted scene is shown in a flashback sequence in "Let Our Angel Live"!
TO
SEE AN ANGEL DIE
aired 11/30/80
written by Edward J. Lakso
/ directed by Dennis Donnelly
co-starring
Jane Wyman -Elanor Willard
Cameron Mitchell -Tom Grainger
Gary Frank -Ted Grainger
Katie Hanley -Charlene Grainger
Shortly after arriving in
Hawaii to work at the new Townsend Associates office, Kris
is kidnapped and the rest of the group allows a psychic to aid them in finding her.
Angel
Clues:
*4376 Kalhaii Avenue is the new, but temporary, address of Townsend Associates. With a pool, its own beach and a garden of beautiful plants, the Angels are in paradise!
*While going through Kris's
things, Elanor finds a Raggedy Ann Doll. Strangely, Kelly doesn't react at the
resemblance to her precious doll Lily Beth ("The Seance"). She also finds a book of Hansel & Gretel. It is a good luck charm given to Kris from her mother and Kelly tells that she never leaves home without
it. Kris also flashes back to images of her mother reading the story to her.
*What has happened to Kris? Tired of being terrorized by Grainger, she goes into a verbal tirade of what a horrible
human being Grainger is. This wasn't the first time viewers saw Kris's bad side though.
In "One Love Two Angels" she told Kelly that she only saved her life because
of their boyfriend, Bill. This new mean streak in Kris Munroe is a shocking new side to a woman who was once so perky and innocent.

*Julie Rogers now lives in
Marina Del Ray, California, according to her luggage tag.

words in telling the Angels how much they've done for her.
*When Bosley says that the
picture featuring Lisa Gallo is bad, he isn't kidding! The two heads on the photograph
are so conspicuously imposed that it could have appeared in the National Enquirer. The
same picture, with different heads, was also used in the episode "I Will Be Remembered".

Undercover
Angels:
Kris is a go-go/hula dancer
and later poses as a participant in a volleyball game
Julie is a go-go/hula dancer
Kelly poses as a bicycling
cabby
Angel
Clues:
*While listening to Bobby
Ahuna's story about Steve's daughter, Julie tells him that she knows what the life of a runaway is like!
*Charlie and the Angels seem
genuinely concerned about Julie's disappearance, for Charlie tells Julie that his million dollars is nothing compared to having
her safe and sound.
*Apparently Kris's trucking
lessons in "Angels go Truckin'" paid off, for she handles the semi-truck in this episode quite well. At least the producers were consistent in having her drive the truck over Kelly.
*Gene Barry (who also appeared
in ‘Angels in the Wings’) was the star of Aaron Spelling’s first hit series back in 1963, ‘Burke’s
Law’. When the show was reprised in 1994 (also starring Barry), Tanya Roberts
made a guest appearance in the episode ‘Who Killed Nick Hazard?’. She
wasn’t the only famous sleuth to appear in it. Anne Francis from ‘Honey
West’, Buddy Epson from ‘Barnaby Jones’, Ed Byrnes from ‘Sunset 77 Strip’, Martin Kove from
‘Cagney & Lacy’, and Jameson Parker from ‘Simon & Simon’, also guest starred.

come up with the ridiculous scheme of marrying him off to a lonely and the clueless owner of an art gallery.
Undercover
Angels:
Kelly is an art gallery patron
Kris plays a con-artist
Julie pretends to be a representative
for a cattle company
Bosley plays a reverend and
a disgruntled investor
Angel
Clues:
*For someone who is so street
smart, Julie can't seem to come up with a good lie when confronted by "Papa" Joe and his men.
She gets so confused she ends up tapping Charlie for a hefty donation to Monica's art gallery!
*Not only is Kris "crazy",
as Kelly puts it, for thinking up this marriage idea, but so are all the Angels for going along with it. Even though they are trying to save Monica from heartache, how could they possibly marry her off
to such a creep? This is an episode of ‘Jerry Springer’ waiting to
happen!
*Just how pathetic is Monica
Reegis? Kelly is her bridesmaid and all she really is to her is a guest at the
art gallery who Monica only met a few days before.

Undercover
Angels:
All of the Angels pose as
single women looking for fun at the Hot Line Club
Angel
Clues:
*After all the torment that
Kelly has been through, she should see the light and quit the detective business. She's
been in numerous car accidents, drugged up with heroine, and now this -terrorized by a crazy drag queen! Considering Kelly's
state of mind at the time Margo drags her on stage, viewers can accept the fact that Kelly must have forgotten what happened
to her the last two times she was hypnotized. See "The Seance" & "Angels in Springtime".

Mammoth Studios to search for a mad archer who is haunting a movie set.
Undercover
Angels:
Julie, Kelly, and Kris all
pose as stuntwomen, reluctant ones at that.
Bosley poses as an international
film mogul
Angel Clues:
*The movie the Angels are
working in is called ‘Marion & Her Merry Maids’ which is a remake of a film the archer is obsessed with. The original would most likely be Errol Flynn’s 1938 version of ‘Robin
Hood’.
*Marion & Her Merry Maids
is being filmed in Studio 8. This is the same "haunted" stage the Angels worked
on in "Angels in the Wings"
*Julie isn't a complete Angel
yet! After Kelly takes her first dive into an airbag, Julie admits to cheating
when the three Angels drew straws!!
*It isn't unusual for the
Angels to joke with Bosley in any possible situation, but this episode is full of one-liners and amusing dialogue, usually
at his expense. The Angels blame him for the fact that they have become stuntwomen,
even after he reminds them that it was Charlie's idea!!
*This is the very last episode
to feature any Angel cleavage, a'la Julie and Kris in low-cut saloon girl dresses.
*This was the last episode
to air on Saturday nights. The series would go on a three month hiatus, clearly
a sign that it would not be renewed for the 1981-1982 season.

Sadly, the appearances of Jill, Sabrina, and Tiffany do not surface, nor are they ever mentioned.
*There are two versions of
this episode running in syndication! In one, Bosley mentions what happened to him the last time he was in the hospital (see
"Terror on Ward One"), and Kris tells the story, as if she were there! In the second version, the entire scene and flashback sequence are missing!
