"(In the first season)
Bosley was sort of officious effeminate snip. I fantasize Charlie really
works for Bosley, who's the brains of the operation - a man with style, class, and the nerve of Napoleon". -David Doyle 1977
John Bosley may just be the brains behind Charlie's
operation. He is without a doubt one of the hardest working, loyal, and dedicated employees Charlie Townsend could
ever hoped to have had. Although Bosley started out as a comic foil to a parade
of jokes made by the Angels, he would turn into a serious detective who was right by their side capturing killers and kidnappers,
but never receiving the same accolades they did.
Bosley's past is even more mysterious than Charlie's. It
is learned through a psychic in "Haunted Angels" that Bosley was quite a party animal during his youth and how he lost his
clothes while involved in a skinny dipping escapade. From that point to his employment
at Townsend Associates, his life accomplishments are very unclear. In "The Killing
Kind", Bosley refers to a wife. Her existence is never mentioned again. If he was still married to her, then he would definitely seem to be quite the louse. Bosley had more affairs than any of the Angels.
Bosley possessed a great deal of charm and apparently a great deal of virility, for women flocked to him at every given
chance. And he was always the gentleman.
One of the most tender scenes featuring Bosley is when he escorts a former prostitute, Elsbeth, home after she helps
the Angels entrap a blackmailer ("The Vegas Connection"). Even though he
is more of a father figure to her, she requests a good-night kiss, seeing that she has never had one before. Sweetly, he obliges.
Bosley's shining moment came in the episode "Angels in Waiting". Fed up with being "predictable" and a laughable sidekick for the Angels' amusement, Bosley goes off on
a tirade and challenges the Angels to a contest. Smitten with an elegant woman
he met in a restaurant earlier that day, he returns to romance her and finds himself having the time of his life. His luck with love was pretty much equal to that of the Angels (see "Romantic Angels"). This love interest had ulterior motives in seeing him and broke his heart as so many other women had done
before. Through this incident, the Angels now viewed Bosley as a peer, rather
than as a fuddy-duddy sidekick and from that point on he was pretty much treated with equal respect.
John Bosley may have fussed about case fees and the expenses the Angels cost Townsend
Associates (like Kelly's wrecked cars in "Angels on Wheels"), but deep down inside he was extremely lovable. He was always there for the Angels in a pinch, rescuing them from many compromising situations. Any repressed anger he had came to the surface when he watched in horror as his best friend, Kelly Garrett,
was shot in the head! After beating her assailant to a pulp, Bosley became the
rock that held Kris and Julie together during their time of grief. "Listen, both
of you," he said. "We are a team. A
winning team and we always have been. This is no time to start doubting ourselves". Of all things, Bosley was definitely a team player.
He never minded taking a backseat to all the praise the Angels received from Charlie and took their jokes and put-downs
fairly well. David Doyle was correct when he said he thought Bosley had "style,
class, and nerve..." Over the years John Bosley had proven himself a great detective,
protector, friend, and the best partner an Angel could ever have!
