Although
she pranced in beaming with confidence and poised with elegance, Tiffany Welles’ entrance into the Townsend offices
was equivalent to the arrival of a hurricane. Kris, Kelly, and Bosley had met
their match in Tiffany Welles!
As the daughter of a Connecticut police chief who was a childhood friend of
Charlie's, Tiffany was raised in quite different surroundings than her fellow co-workers.
Kris seems to have grown up in a dysfunctional family and Kelly had no family at all.
Tiffany comes from the sophisticated airs of the east and doesn't mind showing it off.
Her mother teaches Latin and her father works for the police department. Proving
just how cultivated in the arts she really is, Tiffany played the cello and claimed to play the violin while working on two
different cases ("Angels at the Altar" & "Angels on the Streets").
It was in college that Tiffany would begin to show off her impressive aptitudes in
a variety of fields. While attending Whitley
College, Tiffany became the president of the Kappa Omega Psi sorority
house and changed the structure of the house by raising money for charities and showing that the sorority house was more than
just a party pad. For her great accomplishments at the college, Tiffany was quite
the legend ("Angels on Campus"). Branching out from her regular academic schedule,
Tiffany became interested and even studied the occult. She had been deemed a
"sensitive" by psychics and even worked with famed ghost hunter, Hans Kempler ("Of Ghosts & Angels").
After graduating with honors from Whitley
College, Tiffany joined the Boston
Police Academy. It may seem strange that Tiffany would elect to be a police woman with her highly refined background, but
in the episode "Angel Hunt" she tells Kris and Kelly that it was her thirst for "adventure" that drove her to the police academy. It should have came as no surprise that Charlie would select her
to replace his smartest Angel thus far, Sabrina Duncan. Tiffany's skill and know-how
was never questionable. She could hold her own with Kris and Kelly any
day. From the start they formed a strong friendship that seems more genuine than
the other trios. Tiffany wasn't the emotional type and her sense of humor was
quite dry. She was very direct and to the point, never mincing words. Although it seems that intellectually Tiffany was miles beyond her co-workers, she never seemed to put
them down or resent them for not being as highly educated as she was.
While Tiffany may have had the highest levels of education, she wasn't as worldly
as one would suspect. Upon her arrival in California,
Tiffany was destined to learn the ropes and who better to teach her than Kris. Although
she didn't seem quite right on roller skates or a surfboard ("Angels on Skates" & "Angel Hunt"), at least Tiffany tried. Sometimes she would let down her high and mighty guard and let loose. In "Cruising Angels", Tiffany is put in a hilarious predicament when Kelly tries to park Charlie's yacht. With one leg hanging in a porthole and the rest of her dangling in dismay, Tiffany
proves what a good sport she could be. And posing as a female truck driver seemed to be just what Tiffany needed to let down
her hair and enjoy life a little more ("Angels Go Truckin'").
Tiffany's best moments came when she was posing as a well to do society matron or
a political aid. She is especially convincing as a rich niece of millionaires
in "Home $weet Homes" and as a bribing campaign manager in "Three for the Money". Doing
what she knows best, Tiffany plays up her stylized and sophisticated personality to the hilt.
And nobody would suspect her to be any different because she is such a natural at it.
It may seem that Tiffany is somewhat of a bitch on some occasions. Her disgust at the ignorance of Detective Harrigan in "Harrigan's Angels" can't go unmentioned, nor can
her shocked reaction at the sight of a prostitute in "Angels on the Street". Tiffany
isn't a bitch by any means, she's just very professional and is only accustomed to things being done right. On the topic of Detective Harrigan, she is obviously repelled by his lack of organization and inebriated
state. Her horror at seeing a prostitute on the street with a sailor may make
her seem like she thinks she is so much better than that. Being an Angel, after
all, she is, of course, but the reality here is that Tiffany has probably never really been exposed to anything like that
in her life. Spending her youth behind books and musical instruments, Tiffany
had never really been out in the world to see what all the "adventure" she craved would really bring her. And for anyone who still isn't convinced that Tiffany had more than her own agenda on her mind, "Nips and
Tucks" is a must see. In this episode, Tiffany used compassion and words of experience
to help comfort a bandaged victim from the trauma of plastic surgery. And that
wasn't in the job description.
Another good side to Tiffany was her strong friendship with her co-workers. Seeing how much more cultured she was in comparison to Kris and Kelly, one would think
she wouldn't even bother with them outside of the office. Contrary to that notion
though, is the fact that Tiffany, Kris, and Kelly really did seem like friends. Whereas
Sabrina was more of their leader, Tiffany acted as an equal to Kris and Kelly. When
Jill had been kidnapped by a ruthless killer in Arizona,
it was Tiffany who spent all night at the college library looking for maps and charts to help Kris find her missing sister
("An Angel's Trail"). And nobody can forget how strong she was in comforting
both Kelly and Kris during their time of grief in "One Love Two Angels". Between
Bosley and her, they had their work cut out for them. With both Kelly and Kris
in love with the same man, the two sidekicks were right in the middle of an Angel feud.
When that man was found dead, it was Tiffany who realized that he had been murdered and brought the former friends
together to help avenge his death.
Even with her good points recognized, it was always quite obvious Tiffany was a breed
apart from the other Angels. She never seemed to be quite taken with Bosley as
Kris and Julie had been when they were first hired on, although she did have one tender moment with him during her first assignment
("Love Boat Angels"). In a rare moment of feeling insecure, Tiffany tells Bosley that she feels it may be
difficult to fill Sabrina's shoes. Bosley asures her that she is doing a fine job helping on the case. And in
one incident she was so blunt that she sent Kris running out of the office in tears!
It's true! In "Fallen Angel", Kris ponders why Jill would come into town
without notifying her. Kelly is obviously shaken up by Jill's romantic behavior
with their suspect and Kris is obviously concerned about Jill's involvement with him as well, but Tiffany is oblivious to
both these facts. "Maybe she's hiding something", Tiffany states of the Angel
who she still hasn't met. Upon blurting out those words she realized she had
goofed and was rendered speechless.
After a year with Townsend Associates, Tiffany returned east for a visit and apparently
had satisfied her urge to be a police woman and detective. Without notifying
Kelly or Kris, she told Charlie she wouldn't be returning to California
or to work anytime soon. Neither Kris nor Kelly seem fazed by the news. Because of her strong individuality, Tiffany never quite clicked as an Angel. She was in many ways intellectually superior to her co-workers and detective work
must have been somewhat demeaning for her, even though it was what she had wanted at one time.
It would be easier to imagine Tiffany behind Charlie's desk calling the shots rather than having her slip into a slinky
dress and layer on the make-up to work the streets ("Angels on the Streets"). Of
all the Angels, Tiffany Welles is most definitely the most elegant, cultured, refined, and sophisticated. Because she possessed these unique qualities, she sometimes seemed out of her element. But no matter
what anyone says, Tiffany is all Angel and then some!
